LATICRETE® Products Provide Installation Link In Brisbane Footbridge Project
Over the Brisbane River in Australia, a new footbridge was constructed to link the South Bank Parklands with Queensland
University. A beautiful, scenic walkway for Australia, the bridge was a year-long construction project that used
LATICRETE International, Inc., installation expertise and product lines for its successful completion.
Project contractor P & L Landscaping Pty Ltd. of Brookfield, Australia, worked closely with LATICRETE Australia
throughout the project. "We've used LATICRETE® products in past Brisbane projects," said Peter Mulkearns of P & L
Landscaping. "We knew we could depend on LATICRETE Australia for the Brisbane Bridge installation. It
turned out, our instincts were correct."
The project installation job involved paving and granite slabs. Both were fixed into the bridge structure,
applied with a slurry bond coat fortified with LATICRETE Latabond® Latex Admix. While the bed was in wet form,
LATICRETE® Wetfix was dusted on the damp screed and the stone was placed on the mud bed. A specially formulated
LATICRETE black grout was also used in the project. Blending LATICRETE® 226 Thick Bed Mortar with sanded grout
oxides and polymers, LATICRETE Australia was able to supply the specific grouting material that suited this particular
application.

LATICRETE International, Inc. is introducing LATAPOXY® 310 Stone Adhesive and LATAPOXY 310 Rapid Stone Adhesive,
standard and rapid-curing epoxies with non-sag consistencies perfect for vertical and overhead applications.
Intended for “spot bonding,” these two-part epoxies can be used to attach stone tiles, slabs and large format
ceramic tiles to walls, soffits and ceilings over a variety of substrates. Additionally, these adhesives are perfect
for bonding masonry and precast concrete; filling cracks in stone, ceramic tile, wood and concrete; and laminating
stone table and counter edges. “Both versions of our LATAPOXY 310 Stone Adhesive provide a high-strength bond
to interior applications,” stated Dr. Francis X. Quinn, Vice President of Technology at LATICRETE. “These products
offer many advantages to an installer including a fast setting time (only five minutes for LATAPOXY 310 Rapid Stone
Adhesive!), a cold temperature cure, an easy mixing ratio and a non-staining color which is ideal for light colored
stones.”
“LATAPOXY 310 Stone Adhesive was developed to provide installers with a more efficient method for using the very
popular European dab installation technique,” stated Rosi Rooshenas, Senior Research Chemist at LATICRETE. “The
traditional dab technique is very time consuming and labor intensive. Our method is both fast and economical.
The two epoxy components are simply mixed in equal volumes and applied to the back of a stone or ceramic tile
in five dabs covering 10% of the tile’s surface area. And, because it can be used in thickness up to 1-2 inches,
LATAPOXY 310 eliminates the need to straighten out uneven walls and ceilings with expensive renders,” added
Rooshenas.
Approximately 200,000 sq. ft. of LATICRETE® installation systems were a vital part of the new Willowbend Mall located
in Plano, Texas, just twenty miles outside of the exploding Dallas metroplex. Designed for the sophisticated
Dallas community, the main floors of the Willowbend Mall feature a striking design of Solnhofen Limestone from
Germany in 6"x6", 6"x12", 12"x12" and 12"x 24". The floor is accented with Sanpucci Limestone from Portugal in
6"x12", 12"x12" and 18"x24", and Burlington slate from England in 6"x 6", 6"x12" and 12"x12". The mall's food
court is clad entirely in Italian porcelain in 4"x12", 12"x12", 12"x 24" and 16"x16" while fossil stone was installed
on all the vertical surfaces, such as planters, benches and banquets. Lastly, a majestic water fountain in the
grand court showcases 1500 sq. ft. of stunning glass mosaic tile.
"The new Willowbend Mall has first-class materials you will not see in most malls," stated Dan McNeill, LATICRETE
Technical Representative and consultant for this project. "It has very high-end tile and stone in it from all
parts of the world. I can assure you that, having used the LATICRETE installation system, this floor will be
in great condition for many, many years to come."
LATICRETE® 86 Self-Leveling Underlayment was used to level the floors and LATICRETE® Blue 92 Anti-Fracture Membrane was
used to prevent cracks from making their way up to the tile. LATICRETE® 3701 Mortar Admix was mixed with LATICRETE®
226 Thick Bed Mortar to create a mud bed. LATICRETE® 220 Marble & Granite Mortar was then used to install the
limestone while LATICRETE®272 Premium Floor N' Wall Thin-Set Mortar was used to install additional tile and the
limestone.
According to Pat Folton of Tiede Zoeller, the tile contractor for the project, "The LATICRETE installation systems are
incredible. The durability of LATICRETE 226 Thick Bed Mortar is blowing everyone away and the LATICRETE Blue 92
Anti-Fracture Membrane has proven to be very effective due to the constant movement associated with the large expanses
of mall construction. We are very pleased."
